Did You Know...

• The Alabama Sports Festival was organized in 1982 to develop a grassroots Olympic-style competitions and expose athletes, volunteers and spectators of all ages, especially our youth, to Olympic sports and the overall Olympic experience with all of its tradition and ceremony.

• The first competition in 1983 was held in Auburn, Alabama and featured 300 athletes and four sports. In 2009, Alabama Sports Festival XXVII Programs showcased more than 6,000 athletes competing in 20 different Olympic-style sports at the State Games, and events hosted with the Alabama Public Housing Authorities, which target at-risk youth.

• Lighten Up Alabama is an educational awareness program that encourages Alabamians to develop healthy, active lifestyles and eating habits.

• The Alabama Sports Festival launched the Alabama Students Against Tobacco Ambassador Program in 2001. A program that utilizes high school students to speak out against tobacco use by students.

• The Alabama Sports Festival promotes an anti-drug hotline (1-800-392-8011) to report illegal drug activity.

• Since 1993, the Alabama Sports Festival has awarded 329 academic scholarships to the youth of Alabama totaling more than $193,300.

• A 1995 partnership with the Alabama Association of Housing and Redevelopment Authorities (AAHRA) enabled the Alabama Sports Festival to provide services and consult with the AAHRA Youth Sports Committee on event planning and management. Together with the AAHRA, we co-host tournaments for the youth of public housing. Student-athletes must maintain a 'C' average in school, or agree to participate in tutoring programs to compete in these tournaments.

• Using sports as a vehicle, the Alabama Sports Festival stresses positive life-style choices; good education, the importance of family, church, school and community.

• The Inaugural Southeast Sports Festival was hosted by the Alabama Sports Festival in the cities of Shelby County, Alabama in 2006. (www.SoutheastSportsFestival.org)

• As a value-oriented and volunteer driven organization, the Alabama Sports Festival's primary focus is 'Reaching the Leaders of Tomorrow...Today, by Teaching the Importance of Academics and Good Citizenship through Athletics!'

• The Alabama Sports Festival Inc., a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization (IRS # 63-0830085), is a United States Olympic Committee State Games Programs participant and a charter member of the National Congress of State Games.
